Is there a Scottish counterpart to Brigid? I've enjoyed being in touch with the Scottish side of my ancestry, and love reading the Mabinogeon and have worked with a tarot deck based on the Tuatha de Danaan...but I'm wishing I could delve into some lore and get to know some god/desses who are more associated with the Picts/Scots/north of Britain. Is there even such a pantheon?

The short answer is, yes! Brigid was/is worshiped in Scotland as well as Ireland. I believe she is more commonly known as Brìde in Scotland (although she is known by that name in Ireland as well) and her mythology is closely tied ti the Cailleach (the Winter Hag). Here is a great article about her and the Cailleach that does cover her Scottish heritage: Brìde the Cailleach As to a Scottish pantheon...things then a little more complicated. Possibly Rowan has more information as Scotland is more her territory. But what little light I can shed, there is not a whole lot remaining that could be termed a Scottish pantheon in the same way as there is in Ireland. There are a couple of factors at play in that, one being that there was a fair amount of migration in-between Ireland and Scotland for a long while. Here is a short but succinct article on the connections between the two. I believe it is still commonly believed that the Gaelic culture in Scotland was derived from Ireland, but it is possible that there is more information out there that contradicts that. The Picts, as far as my understanding is (and I could be wrong so folks with more info please let me know) are thought to be the people of Scotland who resided there prior to and along side the Gaels in the Iron Age, I believe they are thought to be Celtic linguistically (which is really all Celtic refers to, a set of languages). It is the Picts that the Romans had to fight off and ultimately why they built the Hadiran's wall. Other than that, I don't have a whole lot of information and sadly do not have any solid sources to point you to. That being said there is still a lot that has remained of Scottish folk culture and traditions. Tairis: has a lot of great resources and articles and usually splits things up by Irish and Scottish traditions The books that get listed as the top three Scottish books for Celtic Recon are: The Gaelic Otherworld — John Gregorson Campbell, ed. by Ronald Black Carmina Gadelica — Alexander Carmichael The Silver Bough — F. Marian MacNeil Of interest, the excavation of Ness Brodgar, places huge ceremonial and just significant importance on the Orkney isles for Neolithic Britain and Scotland. So that might be a great site to start researching on, it's one that I periodically keep my eye on: The Ness Brodgar Excavations Hopefully some of this information is the least bit helpful!

Thanks Branwen!! SOOO helpful! I've read about Ness Brodgar but haven't seen this site (visiting the Ring of Brodgar might be #1 on my list of places I've visited in Scotland! maybe anywhere...I still recall walking there during some of my meditations). It hadn't been discovered when I visited the Orkneys, and it's been calling me back since I heard of it a couple years ago! I'm looking forward to all the reading/links you've pointed me to, including the books if I can get ahold of them. And I'll be coming back to you or Rowan with more Qs as I go, I suspect! Thanks again, it's so wonderful to have people to ask these questions of, instead of reinventing the wheel research-wise!

Oh you've been to the Orkney's! How fantastic! I've yet to make the pilgrimage myself, but it is on the list. Especially with the new site they've found. The Isle of Skye also high on my list of Scotland must sees.
I am happy to answer any following questions as I am able, and am very grateful that you felt comfortable enough to ask here!

Hi there! I've been to Scotland, but haven't made it to the Hebrides yet either, though they are high on my list! The story of the selkie is believed to have originated on Orkney, and there are stones on Staffa that are like the Giant's Causeway in Ireland. It is difficult finding resources on Scottish deities, as much of the lore is closely linked to Irish lore, but I know of a few local gods that are tied to specific places, like Cliodha (or Clota), a goddess of the river Clyde, and Tava, a goddess of the river Tay. I've also personally worked with Corra, a Scottish goddess of prophecy and communion with the dead; she often appears as a white crane. Regarding the linguistic connections, there is also a strong Norse influence on the Hebridean islands, and many of the place names draw from Norse or have both a Gaelic and a Norse name. Though Gaelic is the Celtic language, another old language of Scotland is Scots, which is Germanic in origin (and often heard in old folk songs). That's my five cents, but I'm still learning too.

I have a question for Rowan. Could you refer me to sources on Corra? You mention working with her and I'm having trouble finding information.
Thank you so much!
